Members of the Missionaries of Prayer and Presence apostolate are Catholic men, women and youth with a heartfelt zeal for the salvation of souls. After a period of formation, they commit to the on-going pursuit of personal holiness and, from that foundation, offer prayers and practices for the souls of the dying, the conversion of those who have willfully turned away from God, and for the relief and release of the holy souls in Purgatory. We pray, not only for those close to home, but also for the countless souls throughout the world most in need of Our Lord’s mercy.

The letter  from the foundress

Being welcomed into the “hub” of organizations associated with Blessed Sacrament parish is no mere coincidence. Several years ago, I joined a pilgrimage to Cap-de-la-Madeleine with the simple expectation of enjoying a time of silent retreat. Someone else had a different idea.

One day, sitting before the statue of Our Lady, everything in and around me became still. I looked around and, very unusually, there was no one else in the church. Turning back to Our Lady, I felt her smile and gently say, “I am here for you, my daughter.”

Until that moment, I had honoured Our Lady, but I would not have said I had a devotion to her, or even that I loved her in any particularly special way. But at that moment, with tears in my eyes, she became my Mother.

One more surprise was waiting for me. On the way home, our group stopped at the final resting place of Blessed Frederic Janssoone. I had never heard of him, but was interested to learn. During a tour of the museum, our guide told a story of how Fr. Frederic helped his friend, Brother Andre, when he was having doubts about being able to complete the task given him by the Lord – the building of St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal. This story pierced my heart, and I understood Bl. Frederic was to be my help and encouragement as I struggle to remember it’s all about trusting in God, not in what I think of my talents, or lack thereof.

Now, here we are: the Missionaries of Prayer and Presence apostolate is established with many thanks to my friend Bl. Frederic, and to Mother Mary who is the much-loved source of every grace and blessing bestowed on our missionaries and those for whom we pray.

I am confident it was Our Blessed Mother who guided my steps to Blessed Sacrament and who was the third person in my first meeting with Dennis Girard. With our chaplain, Deacon Chuck Fink and our commissioned missionaries, I thank you for your very warm welcome, and we look forward to a long and fruitful association.

May many souls be helped to Heaven as we pray: Hail Mary….

Margaret Johnson
